Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Wednesday evening paid a condolence visit to the widow and family of late Nigerian football legend and coach, Christian Chukwu, at their residence in Enugu.
Governor Mbah, who was away in London for the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit at the time of Chukwu’s passing, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and assured the bereaved family of the state government’s unwavering support.
Describing Chukwu—fondly known as “Chairman”—as a national icon and an inspiration to generations of Nigerian youth, Mbah said the late footballer’s contributions to sports and national unity would never be forgotten.
“We are not only mourning a sports hero, we are grieving a son of Enugu who brought immense pride to our state and the entire country,” the governor said. “Christian Chukwu will be immortalised. His legacy deserves to live on as a constant reminder of what dedication, humility, and excellence can achieve.”
He noted that the death of the former Super Eagles captain and coach was not just a personal loss to his family but a significant blow to the entire nation—especially the people of Enugu, his home state.
After consoling the family and signing the condolence register, Mbah told journalists that plans were underway to honour Chukwu in a manner befitting his towering legacy.
Christian Chukwu, a revered figure in Nigerian football, captained the national team to win the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations and later coached the team through various international engagements. His leadership, discipline, and humility endeared him to fans and colleagues across the country and beyond.
