The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) recently conducted raids on several rice stores in Utako Market, Abuja, as part of a crackdown on unfair pricing and deceptive packaging practices.
During the operation, FCCPC’s Director of Surveillance and Investigations, Boladale Adeyinka, confirmed that ten shops were sealed, as they were suspected to be part of a cartel involved in repackaging locally sourced rice and marketing it as imported brands.
Adeyinka stated that the enforcement action followed credible reports from both brand owners and concerned consumers, who revealed that locally produced rice was being fraudulently sold under the names of long-discontinued foreign brands.
