The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, has ordered a thorough investigation into the tragic death of five children in the Agyaragu community, Obi Local Government Area.
This directive was announced in a statement released on Monday in Lafia by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ramhan Nansel.
According to the statement, the lifeless bodies of the children were discovered inside an abandoned, unserviceable vehicle parked at the residence of one Mr. Abu Agyeme.
The Police Commissioner expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families. He also urged parents, guardians, and vehicle owners to be vigilant and to ensure that children do not gain unsupervised access to parked or abandoned vehicles.
Nansel disclosed that on Sunday at around 5:30 p.m., a resident of the area, Mr. Ozimna Ogbor, reported that several children were found unresponsive inside the disused vehicle.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the victims, aged between six and ten years, locked inside the vehicle. They were immediately taken to Aro Hospital in Agyaragu, where a medical doctor confirmed their death due to suspected suffocation.
Nansel noted that the bodies showed signs of severe heat burns, and at the request of the families, the remains were released for burial.
“This heartbreaking incident serves as a painful reminder of a similar tragedy that occurred in August 2019,” he added.
