Supporters of the Labour Party (LP), led by the Julius Abure faction, alongside members of several civil society organisations (CSOs), held a peaceful protest on Tuesday, August 6.at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja. The demonstration was sparked by the exclusion of LP candidates from the upcoming bye-elections.
They alleged that INEC deliberately omitted names of LP candidates submitted by the Abure-led leadership, describing the action as unconstitutional and undemocratic.
The Nenadi Usman-led faction, which claims legal control of the party, disowned the protest, stating it was not sanctioned by the legitimate leadership. The group described the protesters as “impostors”, warning that those behind the demonstration may face legal consequences for impersonation and unlawful assembly.
The protest highlights the ongoing internal leadership dispute within the Labour Party and the broader implications it may have on the party’s participation in future elections
