Ogun State, Nigeria – August 21, 2025
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized a Rolls-Royce worth ₦905 million along with other contraband items during a recent anti-smuggling operation in Ogun State. The seizure is part of a broader effort to clamp down on illegal imports and protect Nigeria’s economy from revenue loss.
The luxury car, believed to have been smuggled into the country without proper documentation or import duties, was intercepted alongside several other high-value items, including foreign rice, used tyres, and second-hand clothing.
Speaking to journalists, the Acting Comptroller of Customs in Ogun, Deputy Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu, said the seizures were made possible through enhanced intelligence and the dedication of customs officers. He confirmed that the total value of the intercepted goods is estimated at over ₦1 billion.
“This operation is a clear message to smugglers that we will not tolerate any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s economic security,” Shuaibu stated. “Luxury or basic goods, smuggling in any form is illegal and harmful to the country.”
He added that investigations are ongoing and arrests are expected as part of efforts to dismantle smuggling networks operating along Nigeria’s borders.
Economic experts have praised the seizure, noting that unchecked smuggling not only robs the government of much-needed revenue but also puts local businesses at a disadvantage. “When people bypass the proper channels, it affects the entire economy, including jobs and local industries,” said economist Nneka Ibeh.
Residents in border communities have also been urged to support the fight against smuggling by providing useful information to authorities.
The Customs Service reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing trade laws while treating citizens with fairness and professionalism.
