Cybercrime Offenders Face Four-Year Jail Term-Chief Judge

The Chief Judge of Katsina State has warned that individuals found guilty of cybercrime, popularly called “Yahoo Yahoo,” risk a minimum sentence of four years in prison.

Speaking at a judicial event, the Chief Judge stressed that cybercrime has become a growing threat to society, damaging Nigeria’s image and exploiting innocent people. He explained that the law is clear on the matter: anyone caught engaging in online fraud, identity theft, or internet scams will face stiff penalties.

He also urged young people to channel their digital skills into productive ventures such as software development, e-commerce, and tech innovation, rather than using technology to defraud others.

Legal analysts say the strong warning is both a deterrent and a reminder that Nigeria is strengthening its fight against cybercrime. For everyday citizens, this means greater protection from online fraudsters, though some caution that enforcement must be fair and transparent.

Use your computers to build, not to cheat—otherwise, you may spend years behind bars.
