Dangote Petroleum Refinery has exported 456,000 tonnes of refined petroleum products to five African countries.

The shipments were confirmed on Sunday, amid a growing fuel supply crisis linked to tensions in the Middle East.

A senior refinery official said the development reflects growing confidence in Nigeria’s refining capacity.

“This shows our ability to meet and exceed local demand while supplying the region,” the official stated.

The refinery shipped 12 cargoes to Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana and Togo.

The cargoes were sold through international traders on a Free on Board basis.

The total volume is estimated at about 608 million litres of fuel.

The export milestone comes after the refinery reached its full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day in February 2026.

Demand for fuel across Africa has surged due to disruptions in global supply chains caused by geopolitical tensions.

He added that the refinery is delivering Euro 5 standard fuel to markets that previously relied on lower-quality imports.

Regional Impact

The exports are expected to ease fuel shortages across West, East and Central Africa.

They will also reduce dependence on imports from Europe and the Middle East.

Analysts say this could lower fuel costs and improve supply stability across the region.

Growing demand

Several countries are now turning to the refinery for supply.

Reports indicate that South Africa, Kenya and Ghana have made enquiries for fuel supply deals.

This follows disruptions linked to the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Domestic supply assurance

The refinery dismissed concerns about local shortages.

The official said provisions were made to meet both domestic and export demands from the start.

He noted that Africa’s limited refining capacity creates strong demand for regional supply solutions.

Economic impact

The exports are expected to boost Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings.

They also position Nigeria as a major energy hub on the continent.

Experts say this marks a shift from years of dependence on imported fuel.

Background

Africa produces crude oil but lacks sufficient refining capacity.

Many countries depend heavily on imported refined products.

Recent global disruptions have exposed the fragility of this system, increasing the need for regional solutions like the Dangote refinery.
