Legal expert and political commentator, Barrister Darlington, has explained that election infractions are serious offenses that violate established electoral rules and laws, stressing the need for accountability to ensure credible elections in Nigeria.
Speaking during a recent discussion on electoral integrity, Barr. Darlington noted that infractions range from vote buying, ballot box snatching, falsification of results, multiple voting, intimidation of voters, and misuse of security agencies, among others.
According to him, โElection infractions are acts that break electoral rules or laws. They undermine the credibility of the democratic process and erode public trust in governance.โ
He emphasized that both politicians and electoral officials must be held accountable whenever such offenses occur, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant security agencies must strengthen monitoring mechanisms and ensure offenders face legal consequences.
โThe integrity of any democracy depends on the fairness of its elections. Until we start punishing those who violate electoral laws, impunity will continue to thrive,โ he stated.
Barr. Darlington also urged citizens to participate actively in the democratic process, noting that public vigilance and civic education are key to reducing electoral malpractice in future elections.
