Before rising to fame on Friends, David Schwimmer had some unconventional jobs, including working for his mother as a process server. While appearing on Monday’s episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Schwimmer shared a surprising story from his early career—serving rockstar Rod Stewart with divorce papers.
“I would be the guy who would pop out of the bushes and serve you divorce papers,” Schwimmer told Colbert with a laugh. He joked about feeling like James Bond during his days on the job, though he quickly admitted, “I am not James Bond.”
However, one of his most memorable deliveries involved none other than Rod Stewart. “Thank goodness I’ve never run into him since,” Schwimmer joked, adding, “I don’t even know if he knows. I don’t think he knows…”
Colbert couldn’t resist a light-hearted jab, quipping, “Well, he knows now!” The comedian also jokingly advised Schwimmer to “change your locks, man. He is vengeful!”
Schwimmer didn’t specify which of Stewart’s two divorces he served him papers for, but it was likely Stewart’s first divorce from Alana Stewart in 1984, who he married in 1979. Stewart later went on to marry model Rachel Hunter in 1990, and is currently married to Penny Lancaster since 2007.
While process serving might not have led to stardom, Schwimmer eventually found success as an actor. Best known for playing Ross Geller on Friends, he now stars in the Disney+ series Goosebumps: The Vanishing.
From process server to one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces—what a career pivot.
