At least five people were killed on Monday in a shooting attack at a bus stop in north Jerusalem, according to Israeli paramedics.
The emergency service Magen David Adom said four victims died at the scene, while a fifth succumbed to injuries in hospital. Twelve others were wounded, including seven in serious condition.
Police said two assailants arrived by car at the Ramot Junction and opened fire on commuters. A security officer and a civilian returned fire, killing both attackers. The Zaka rescue service later confirmed their deaths.
A security guard at a nearby bus station told reporters the gunmen had boarded a bus at the intersection and opened fire, leaving the vehicle โriddled with holes.โ One of the attackers was also armed with a knife.
Following the incident, military checkpoints were set up between Jerusalem and Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East nearly two years into the Gaza war, which has devastated the coastal territory and left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead. The conflict was sparked by the Oct. 7, 2023, assault by Palestinian militants on southern Israel, which killed about 1,200 people.
