Deji Adeyanju: Part of Nigeria’s National Funds Built the Dangote Refinery

Abuja, Nigeria — Activist and political commentator Deji Adeyanju has alleged that a portion of Nigeria’s national resources was utilized by billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote in the construction of the Dangote Refinery, one of the largest single-train refineries in the world.

Speaking during a media interaction in Abuja, Adeyanju claimed that although the project is publicly presented as a private investment, government funds and incentives played a significant role in its development.

“A portion of Nigeria’s national resources was reportedly utilized by Aliko Dangote in constructing the refinery,” Adeyanju stated.[irp]

He argued that while the refinery is expected to boost Nigeria’s economy and reduce dependence on imported fuel, the public deserves transparency regarding the extent of state involvement and support.

“Nigerians have a right to know how much of their money went into this project. If public funds were invested, then the refinery should not be treated as a completely private venture,” he said.

Adeyanju also questioned the monopoly advantage allegedly granted to the refinery, cautioning that it could stifle competition in the downstream oil sector.[irp]

“When you give so much support to one individual or company, you risk creating a system where only a few control the nation’s wealth,” he added.

Analysts note that Adeyanju’s remarks come amid growing debate over the refinery’s ownership structure, government support, and the broader impact of its operations on fuel pricing and national revenue.
