The Delta State Government has reassured residents that it will not abandon flood victims as rising water levels threaten those in coastal communities. In a statement made on Saturday, Festus Ahon, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized the administration’s commitment to protecting and supporting all state residents amid the impending floods.
Ahon urged individuals living in flood-prone areas to relocate to higher ground, announcing that the government is making arrangements to accommodate them in nearby camps. “As soon as we received warnings about the impending flood, our hardworking Governor Sheriff Oborevwori established a high-powered Flood Management Committee headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu,” he stated.
The committee has been actively alerting residents to move to safer locations and is setting up camps in Asaba, Kwale, Patani, Ozoro, and Otu-Jeremi. Collaborating with the State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency, the committee has been visiting coastal communities to inform residents of the upcoming flood and encourage their relocation to designated camps.
As part of its response plan, the government has made provisions for mattresses, food, electricity, water, and medical supplies for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the camps. Ahon also highlighted that arrangements are in place for the education of school children who may be affected by the floods, ensuring their learning continues during this challenging time.
The Delta State Government remains committed to safeguarding the lives and well-being of all residents as it navigates the challenges posed by the rising water levels.
