An activist lawyer, Maxwell Opara, has urged former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to set aside personal interests and form an alliance with a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Naija News reports that Opara made the call during an interview with Arise News on Tuesday.
The lawyer suggested that Kwankwaso should agree to serve as Obi’s running mate in order to strengthen the opposition against President Bola Tinubu.
According to him, such a political arrangement would improve the chances of defeating the ruling party in the next presidential election.
Opara argued that Obi has demonstrated the leadership ability required to govern Nigeria.
“Obi has shown capacity. Coming from nowhere, he was able to enter the Labour Party and deliver such results in the general election, so he has the capacity,” he said.
He urged opposition leaders to set aside ego and personal ambitions.
“It’s time for them to drop their egos and work with Obi, especially Kwankwaso. He should deputize Obi because that’s the only option,” Opara said.
The lawyer also argued that presenting a northern presidential candidate against Tinubu, who is from the South and seeking a second term, may not be politically viable.
“Because if somebody from the North feels they can come and challenge somebody from the South who has not completed their eight years, it will not work,” he said.
He, however, maintained that Obi would still stand a stronger chance even if the opposition decides to field a northern candidate.
“But if the opposition decides to go for somebody from the North, Obi stands a better chance since he has the capacity,” he added.
Opara also criticised suggestions that the 2027 election could be an easy victory for the ruling party.
He added, “It will make these people sit up, since the issue of somebody telling Nigerians that they are preparing for inauguration, not even an election, is an insult to all of us.
“You can’t tell us that it’s a walkover when you have 32 governors who are governors.”
