Tanker Loaded with Diesel Crashes in Ibadan, One Injured
A diesel-laden tanker skidded off the road on Wednesday night, injuring one person near Jin-Jofes Filling Station along the Iwo Road axis of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident, which occurred around 8:07 p.m., involved a DAF tanker with registration number T17657LA (Lagos), carrying 50,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel).
Confirming the accident in a statement on Thursday, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Maroof Akinwande, said the tanker lost control while attempting to negotiate a sharp bend, veered off the road, and fell into a nearby gutter, spilling its contents.
According to Akinwande, the fire service received a distress call from one Mr. Adisa Kazeem, prompting a swift response by firemen led by ACFS Adeniyi Adesina.
“Upon arrival, the team discovered that the tanker had skidded and was leaking diesel rapidly. The firemen quickly blanketed the spillage using a chemical foam compound to suppress the flammability and prevent a potential fire outbreak,” he stated.
He noted that the driver and his motor boy were both rescued alive, though the latter sustained a minor shoulder injury and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Akinwande attributed the cause of the accident to the driver’s loss of control while navigating the bend.
He added that officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Amotekun Corps swiftly intervened to ensure the restoration of traffic flow in the area.
