Abuja, Nigeria – August 4, 2025
Presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has commended Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their remarkable triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afro Basket Championship—securing their fifth consecutive continental title.
D’Tigress defeated Senegal 79-65 in a gripping final held in Kigali, Rwanda, continuing a dominant run that has now firmly established them as the queens of African basketball. The team showcased teamwork, skill, and resilience—qualities that have earned them admiration across Nigeria and the continent.
Obi, in a statement released Monday morning, described the team’s performance as “an inspiring display of excellence, discipline, and unity.” He emphasized that D’Tigress not only brought pride to the nation but also reminded Nigerians of the power of women in sports and leadership.
“This victory is not just about basketball. It’s a story of determination, national pride, and the limitless potential of Nigerian women when given the right support,” Obi stated. He also called on the government and private sector to increase investment in female sports development.
This latest title marks a historic moment, as D’Tigress becomes the first team to win five consecutive AfroBasket championships—an achievement that resonates far beyond the court. The team’s triumph is seen as a beacon of hope in a time when national unity and youth empowerment are sorely needed.
