The Zimbabwean government has adjusted its regulations on importing motor vehicles older than 10 years. Initially banned in March 2024, the restrictions were amended in July through Statutory Instrument (SI) 111, allowing certain exemptions for inherited cars, returning citizens, and diplomats. Now, a further revision, Statutory Instrument 172 of 2024, published on October 18, extends these exemptions to immigrants as defined by customs regulations.

Under the new rules, immigrants and specific categories of vehicles, including vintage and historic models, can be imported if they meet eligibility requirements set by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA). These classic vehicles, at least 25 years old, must retain originality and showcase significant historical or cultural value. Other vehicles already at Zimbabwe’s borders before the law’s publication will also be exempt from the ban.

This latest amendment highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to refine import regulations, balancing the need for modern vehicle standards with flexibility for specific cases. All exempted vehicles will require an import permit from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce before being allowed into the country.
