The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest and detention of social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), citing his repeated refusal to respond to several invitations for questioning.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated that Otse was invited over allegations related to financial misconduct and was connected to multiple petitions the commission had received regarding suspected financial crimes.
“The public is urged to avoid unnecessary speculation and allow the EFCC to carry out its constitutional duties without interference. Once the investigation is concluded, appropriate charges will be filed,” Oyewale said.
He explained that despite numerous efforts to reach Otse through his known addresses and communication channels, he repeatedly ignored the commission’s invitations.
“His arrest was solely based on his failure to respond to these invitations. Although he has made several unguarded comments and attacks against the EFCC, his arrest was not motivated by those actions. Relevant authorities will handle such conduct separately,” he added.
Oyewale emphasized that the EFCC acted within legal bounds by obtaining a valid remand order to keep Otse in custody while investigations continue.
“Just like any suspect under investigation, the EFCC is legally empowered to detain Otse. A proper remand order was secured for this purpose,” he said.
The commission further disclosed that Otse has been granted administrative bail and will be released once he meets the required conditions.
