The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has called for closer collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the state’s local government elections, aiming to boost credibility and transparency in grassroots polls.
OYSIEC Chairman, Afees Adeniyi, appealed on Thursday, during a courtesy visit to INEC headquarters in Ibadan.
Mr Adeniyi said the engagement was necessary to formally notify INEC of the election date—29 December 2026—and to seek institutional support.
He emphasised that collaboration between both electoral bodies is critical to delivering free, fair, and efficient elections at the local level.
“We are here to engage as a sister electoral body… and to seek your guidance as we prepare,” he stated.
Request for support and materials
OYSIEC disclosed plans to request key electoral resources, including an updated voter register and technical guidance to tackle voter apathy.
Adeniyi acknowledged INEC’s previous support during the 2023 elections and expressed optimism about continued cooperation.
INEC pledges support
Responding, Adeniran Tella, Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo State, assured OYSIEC of INEC’s readiness to collaborate.
He stressed that credible local elections are essential to strengthening democracy and improving grassroots governance.
Mr Tella noted the recurring pattern where ruling parties dominate local government elections, urging state electoral bodies to demonstrate independence and integrity.
He called on OYSIEC to uphold professionalism, neutrality, and the rule of law.
If effectively implemented, the collaboration could improve public trust in local elections in Oyo State and set a benchmark for other states.
It may also address long-standing concerns about voter apathy and electoral manipulation at the grassroots level.
