ENUGU, Nigeria — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has expressed confidence that it will reclaim victory in all elections in the 2027 general polls, despite the recent wave of defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) — including that of Governor Peter Mbah and top government officials.
Speaking at a press briefing at the PDP state secretariat in Enugu on Tuesday, the party’s Acting State Chairman, Mr. Steve Oruruo, said the PDP remains strong, united, and committed to rebuilding its structures across the state.
“A lot of people are still with the PDP, and more are indicating interest to join. We are resolute and focused on galvanizing our members to stay united and motivated,” Oruruo said.
“This is not the first time a sitting governor has left the PDP and the party remained firm. Enugu PDP will not capitulate; we are rebuilding, reawakening, and in a state of renaissance.”
Oruruo emphasized that the PDP will not be distracted by recent defections, noting that the party has begun mobilizing its members ahead of credible congresses and primaries to produce quality candidates capable of winning elections in 2027.
“We want to send a clear message that we are unmitigated and unshaken in our commitment to staying solid. We are rebuilding a responsible party where credible candidates will emerge,” he stated.
The acting chairman also disclosed that the PDP has no plan to challenge Governor Mbah’s defection in court, describing the move as part of democratic freedom.
While admitting there are minor challenges at the national level, Oruruo assured party faithful that the PDP has internal mechanisms to resolve disputes swiftly.
“The party is even stronger now than ever before,” he said. “Our strength lies in our unity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the ideals of democracy.”
