Nkanu East, Enugu State – The Enugu State Government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has taken a significant step towards agricultural transformation by launching a 20-hectare cocoa plantation in Nkanu East. This initiative, in collaboration with WhiteRabbit Agro Limited, is part of a broader strategy to boost cocoa production and processing in the state.
The project aligns with Governor Mbah’s ambitious vision of expanding Enugu’s economy and growing its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to $30 billion. Plans are already in motion to extend the initiative to five additional local government areas (LGAs), with each LGA targeting the cultivation of 100 hectares of cocoa.
As part of the partnership, WhiteRabbit Agro Limited is developing 100,000 high-yield cocoa varieties, with an open invitation for local farmers to participate in the program. This move is expected to enhance both production capacity and economic opportunities for residents.
Furthermore, the state government is working on improving infrastructure to support the export of cocoa. The ongoing development of the cargo section at Akanu Ibiam International Airport is set to facilitate the seamless transportation of cocoa products, positioning Enugu as a key player in the global cocoa market.
This initiative marks a major milestone in Enugu’s drive towards economic diversification and agricultural sustainability.
