Eric Chelle Scouts Flying Eagles at U-20 AFCON in Egypt

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has traveled to Egypt to observe Nigeria’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, as they compete in the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His mission: to scout promising young talent for potential inclusion in upcoming senior national team fixtures. Chelle’s presence in Egypt is part of a broader plan to strengthen the Super Eagles ahead of this summer’s fixtures, including the Unity Cup tournament in London (May 27–31), which will feature Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago, as well as a friendly match against Russia scheduled for June.

Several players have already caught attention—midfielder Auwal Ibrahim and defender Daniel Bameyi have earned Most Valuable Player honors for their performances. Chelle’s visit signals a clear intent to identify future Super Eagles stars early, following a tradition that has previously brought talents like Mikel Obi and Victor Osimhen into the national spotlight.

Former U-20 international Samuel Elijah praised Chelle’s proactive scouting, calling it “a vital step in nurturing and promoting Nigeria’s homegrown talent.”

The 2025 U-20 AFCON runs through May 18 in Egypt, with the top four teams qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile this September.
