Former Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, has been named chairman of the newly established Ebonyi State Economic Committee on Industrialisation.
The 15-member committee, comprising economists, industrialists, and technocrats, was inaugurated on Monday in Abakaliki by Governor Francis Nwifuru, who charged the team with spearheading industrial growth in the state, particularly by addressing its erratic power supply.
โYou should harness the stateโs solid minerals and apply your expertise in carrying out this assignment. People will commend us for engaging industrialists and technocrats to guide the stateโs development,โ the governor said.
Nwifuru identified the revival of the moribund Nigerian Cement Company (NIGERCEM), the establishment of a new cement factory, and the development of functional salt production plants as top priorities for the committee.
โWe are called the salt of the nation, yet we lack a functional salt production plant. This must change,โ he declared.
The governor also underscored Ebonyiโs energy deficit, noting that it is the only state without the required electricity base for industrialisation. He expressed confidence that Nnajiโs expertise in the power sector would be critical to addressing the challenge.
โThe state already has an industrial zone, and we trust your ability to attract industries. Your recommendations will help us solve this,โ he added.
In his response, Prof. Nnaji thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in the team and pledged to deliver on the mandate.
โYou are a visionary leader, showing courage and boldness to advance the stateโs development,โ Nnaji said.
The Voice of the People (VOP) reports that other members of the committee include former Labour Party governorship candidate, Dr. Edward Nkwegu, and renowned industrialist, Chibuike Orogwu, among others.
