Former Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Celestine Omehia, has urged the decentralisation of power in Nigeria to enable states and regions exercise greater control over their affairs and resources.
Omehia made the call during a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday while unveiling his new book, Restructuring Nigeria: The Way Forward, scheduled for public presentation on September 24.
He argued that the current governance structure, inherited from military rule, is unsuitable for a democratic system. According to him, states should have the authority to determine priorities on development projects and resource allocation, rather than relying solely on the Federal Government.
Citing road construction in Port Harcourt as an example, Omehia stressed that local communities are better positioned to identify their needs. He also underscored the importance of including all stakeholders, particularly representatives of the people, in any constitutional restructuring process.
The former governor recalled the 2014 National Conference convened under former President Goodluck Jonathan, describing it as a step in the right direction, but lamented that its recommendations were never implemented. He maintained that a fresh constitutional conference would be more effective than piecemeal amendments to the constitution.
According to Omehia, his book is intended to stimulate national dialogue on Nigeria’s development and the urgent need for restructuring. He said the book launch would provide a platform for stakeholders to engage constructively on how to build a more equitable and effective governance system.
