Lagos – Barrister Darlington, a prominent legal practitioner and public commentator, has taken a bold stance on Nigeria’s escalating insecurity, questioning narratives that hold the entire nation responsible for the crisis. His comments came during a recent interview with Voice of the People Television (VOPTV), where he directly challenged the Sultan of Sokoto to provide clarity on the country’s growing security challenges.
Speaking passionately on the program, Darlington asked, “How do you blame an entire nation for a problem you created? This insecurity—who exactly are the terrorists, and where are they coming from?” He emphasized that generalizing the nation as culpable for terrorism and violent attacks not only misrepresents reality but also undermines the pursuit of concrete solutions.
The legal expert argued that while Nigeria is experiencing rising attacks by armed groups, bandits, and terrorist organizations, it is crucial to identify the actual perpetrators and the sources of these threats. According to Darlington, accountability and transparency in tackling these issues are paramount, and assigning collective blame to citizens or regions is both unfair and counterproductive.
Darlington also called on religious and traditional leaders to play a proactive role in curbing insecurity rather than engaging in rhetoric that may inadvertently shift responsibility away from those genuinely orchestrating criminal activities. He highlighted that understanding the origins, networks, and operational bases of terrorist groups is essential for any meaningful security intervention.
“These attacks are not abstract; they are carried out by identifiable groups with specific agendas. To effectively combat them, we must stop pointing fingers at the nation as a whole and start asking hard questions about the individuals and organizations fueling these acts of violence,” he added.
His comments resonate amid widespread concerns over Nigeria’s security situation, with violent incidents, mass abductions, and terrorist attacks reported across northern and central regions. Citizens have increasingly expressed frustration with government policies, the effectiveness of security agencies, and the lack of clear communication on efforts to curb violence.
Observers say Darlington’s intervention may intensify debates on the roles of leadership, government accountability, and traditional institutions in addressing national security challenges. Many analysts believe that his pointed critique underscores the urgent need for strategic solutions that focus on actual perpetrators rather than generalizing blame across communities or the nation.
