Nigerian football legend Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha has strongly criticized former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher for his recent remarks downplaying the significance of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Carragher suggested that even if Mohamed Salah won the AFCON, it would not significantly enhance his chances of securing the Ballon d’Or, as the tournament doesn’t carry the same weight as other major competitions.
In response, Okocha, during an interview circulating on social media, stated, “There are some players that will say something, you just overlook it. If you look at their career, if you look at the type of football that they played, you can understand. I mean, you wouldn’t want your son to be like Carragher. So, he can never appreciate African football or the talents that come from Africa.”
Okocha’s comments highlight a broader sentiment among African football enthusiasts and former players who feel that the continent’s premier tournament deserves greater respect on the global stage. The AFCON has been a platform showcasing exceptional talent and has played a pivotal role in inspiring young athletes across Africa.
The debate over the recognition of AFCON in global football discussions continues, with many advocating for a more inclusive appreciation of tournaments beyond Europe and South America.
