Farmer Rescues Newborn Baby Girl Buried Alive in Kebbi

A farmer, Malam Kabiru Kamba, has recounted the miraculous rescue of a newborn baby girl who was found buried alive in his farmland in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

Kamba shared the emotional account on Monday during a visit by the state’s Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Technical Working Group (TWG), led by former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Rafa’atu Hammani.

According to Voice Of the People  (VOP), the farmer said he discovered an unusual ridge in his farmland upon arrival on Friday. Suspecting something was amiss, he stopped some passing motorcyclists and asked them to help dig.

“While digging, we found a piece of fabric buried in the soil. That raised my suspicion, and I quickly alerted the police at a nearby checkpoint,” Kamba said. “They dug further and, to our shock, uncovered a baby girl—alive and crying—wrapped in cloth.”

The baby was miraculously unharmed. Kamba said officials from the Dandi Local Government Council later handed the infant over to him at his request, pending the outcome of police investigations.

“I took her in out of compassion and humanity. I wasn’t expecting anything in return—it was simply the right thing to do,” he said. “Coincidentally, my wife had just given birth, so breastfeeding the baby has not been a challenge.”

Kamba also revealed that the family had planned to hold a naming ceremony for the rescued baby on Wednesday. “I’ve already bought a ram and other necessary items. By Allah’s will, we will name her then,” he added.

His wife expressed joy and readiness to care for the baby as one of her own. “When my husband told me, I felt nothing but happiness. I will raise her just like my own child,” she said.

Hajiya Hammani, who led the TWG delegation, assured the family that the details of the heroic act would be conveyed to the Wife of the Governor, Hajiya Zainab-Nasare Idris, for possible support and recognition.

In his remarks, Alhaji Nasiru Idris, Secretary of the TWG, said the team visited to express their gratitude to God for the baby’s survival and to commend Malam Kamba’s selfless act.

“We also applaud the Nigeria Police for promptly taking up the case and working to bring the perpetrator to justice,” he added.

The TWG donated essential supplies to the baby, including clothes, powdered milk, diapers, a mattress, a baby bed, mosquito net, soap, and detergents.
