Fatal Collision Claims Eight Lives, Injures Eight on Lagos-Badagry Expressway

Lagos, Nigeria – July 7, 2025

A devastating road accident claimed the lives of eight people and left eight others injured in the early hours of Sunday, July 6, at Atura Bus Stop along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The fatal collision, confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), involved a 16-seater commercial Mazda bus (registration number KJA 811 YF) and a DAF truck (registration number T1 4636 LA). The crash, attributed to excessive speeding by the bus driver, occurred before dawn, plunging the Badagry community into mourning.

According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, the bus driver lost control while navigating at high speed, leading to a catastrophic head-on collision with the truck. The impact was so severe that it left little chance for survival, instantly killing eight passengers, including the driver and conductor. Eight others sustained varying degrees of trauma and were swiftly evacuated to Badagry General Hospital by Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel for urgent medical care.

Emergency response teams, including LASTMA, FRSC, Nigeria Police Force (Morogbo Division), and the 244 Battalion of the Nigerian Army (Ibereko Barracks), coordinated a rapid rescue operation to extract survivors and clear the scene. LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who visited the site, described the incident as a “heart-wrenching reminder of the fragility of life” and urged drivers to adhere to speed limits and maintain vehicles to prevent such tragedies.

This accident follows a pattern of deadly crashes on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, with authorities renewing calls for stricter adherence to traffic regulations. The state government is reportedly deploying speed-limiting devices at accident-prone areas to enhance road safety.
