ABUJA, NIGERIA — August 20, 2025
In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on Nigerians living with kidney disease, the Federal Government has released an official list of federal hospitals now offering dialysis treatment at a subsidized rate of ₦12,000 per session.
This development comes as part of ongoing health sector reforms led by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, under the administration’s renewed commitment to affordable healthcare for all. The announcement was made on Tuesday in Abuja by the Minister of Health, Dr. Salma Anas.
Dr. Anas explained that the subsidized dialysis is now available in selected federal teaching hospitals and medical centres across the country.
“We understand the emotional and financial stress that dialysis places on families. This intervention is one way the government is working to reduce out-of-pocket expenses for patients battling chronic kidney conditions,” she said.
Kidney disease affects thousands of Nigerians, many of whom require multiple dialysis sessions each week to survive. The typical cost of a single dialysis session in private facilities can range from ₦30,000 to ₦50,000, placing it far beyond the reach of average citizens.
The new list includes major hospitals such as the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, and the Federal Medical Centre in Keffi, among others. The Ministry noted that more centres will be added as capacity increases.
Health advocates and patient groups have welcomed the move, calling it a significant step toward accessible care. However, some have urged the government to ensure steady supply of consumables, maintain equipment, and increase public awareness about the programme.
For many Nigerians living with kidney disease, this initiative offers a glimmer of hope—not just in terms of survival, but in the possibility of living with dignity, without being crushed by medical bills.
The Ministry has encouraged patients and families to check the official website or visit nearby federal hospitals for full details on how to access the subsidized service.
