FG, NLC in Last-Minute Talks to Avert Nationwide Protest Over Telecom Tariff Hike/Vop

Abuja – The federal government is set to hold a crucial meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) today in a last-minute effort to prevent a nationwide protest scheduled for Tuesday over the recent 50 percent increase in telecommunications tariffs.

A reliable source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the meeting is slated for 5 p.m. on Monday. It will be an inter-ministerial dialogue involving the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and NLC leadership, focusing on addressing concerns raised by organized labor regarding the tariff hike.

The NLC has been mobilizing workers and the public for a mass protest against the tariff adjustment, which was approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on January 20, 2025. In a letter to affiliate unions and state councils last Thursday, NLC General Secretary Emma Ugboaja called for mass participation to send a strong message to the government
