The Federal Government has issued a flood alert for 10 states, warning that heavy rainfall between April 8 and April 12, 2026, could trigger flooding in vulnerable communities.

The warning was contained in a notice released by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment and signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Bokani.

“The following locations and their environs are likely to witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period of prediction: 8th April – 12th April, 2026,” Mr Bokani said.

The alert follows earlier advisories by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Federal Government, which cautioned farmers against early planting due to “deceptive” rainfall patterns recorded in February and early March 2026.

Similarly, the Lagos State Government had warned residents in March to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flash floods as the rainy season approached.

Affected areas

According to the ministry, communities across Ebonyi, Anambra, Ogun, Taraba, Cross River, Benue, Imo, Delta, Rivers, and Abia states are at risk.

In Ebonyi State, Afikpo and Nkalagu were listed, while in Anambra State, Atani, Iyowa Odekpe, Odekpe, and Onitsha may be affected.

Mr Bokani also identified Ayetoro and Ilaro in Ogun State; Donga, Kwata Kanawa, Lau, Serti, Takum, and Yorro in Taraba State; and Edor, Ikom, and Itigidi in Cross River State.

Other locations include Igumale in Benue State; Nworievbi, Okigwe, Otoko, and Owerri in Imo State; Oko Anara in Delta State; Port Harcourt in Rivers State; and Umuahia in Abia State.

Precautionary measures

The ministry urged residents and relevant stakeholders to take precautionary measures to minimise potential damage from flooding.

Mr Bokani emphasised that early warnings are critical to reducing risks, particularly in flood-prone areas.
