Abuja, 8 August 2025 – Nigerian activist and journalist Omoyele Sowore has been taken into custody by the police after refusing to answer questions over allegations of forgery and cyberbullying.
Sowore was invited to the Force Headquarters in Abuja but reportedly requested details of the accusations before making a statement. His lawyers said the police declined to provide them, calling the process a violation of due process.
Amnesty International condemned the detention, describing it as arbitrary and politically driven.
The rights group urged authorities to release Sowore immediately, recalling his previous designation as a Prisoner of Conscience over his activism.
Legal experts and civil society advocates have also criticised the move, warning against the practice of officers acting as both complainant and investigator. Sowore remains in custody as the case unfolds.
