The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osun State Command, has issued a stern warning to motorists against route violations and the operation of unregistered vehicles, particularly those using dealer number plates.
Mr. Leye Adegboyega, the Osun Sector Commander of the FRSC, gave the warning on Monday in Osogbo during a one-day sensitisation rally conducted across several motor parks. The campaign was part of activities marking the 8th Global Road Safety Week, observed annually to promote safer road use worldwide.
Adegboyega highlighted a growing trend in the state, where a significant number of vehicles, including motorcycles, operate without proper registration. Many of these vehicles display foreign dealer plates or stickers and are routinely used by motorists, in violation of traffic regulations.
“Car dealers significantly contribute to this problem by either driving around in unregistered vehicles with dealer plates or selling vehicles to buyers without ensuring they complete the proper registration process,” he said.
He emphasized that this practice not only contravenes FRSC regulations but also leads to substantial revenue loss for the Osun State Government—revenue that could be utilized for road development and maintenance projects currently underway across the state.
“The financial losses caused by the use of unregistered vehicles are immense. This revenue, if properly remitted, could enhance the government’s efforts in constructing and maintaining roads,” Adegboyega said.
Addressing the issue of route violations, the Sector Commander expressed concern over the frequent abuse of one-way routes by both vehicles and motorcycles. He described the practice as a major cause of fatal accidents involving innocent road users.
He warned that the command would intensify enforcement efforts and deal decisively with offenders found violating traffic laws.
Adegboyega concluded by urging all transport stakeholders to take collective responsibility in ensuring the safety of lives and property on the roads, stressing that road safety is a shared duty.
