The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has directed the immediate recall of a patrol team cited in a recent media report alleging bribery, pending a thorough investigation and appropriate disciplinary action.
This directive follows a report published by Premium Times, which highlighted alleged misconduct by FRSC personnel. In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal reiterated FRSCโs zero-tolerance stance on corruption.
โAs an organisation that upholds high standards at all times, we have procedures in place to address indiscipline, corruption, and misconduct during patrols,โ Mohammed said. โIf found guilty, the operatives will face strict disciplinary measures, including dismissal and prosecution.โ
Responding to a part of the report referencing the 2021 arrest of FRSC personnel by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Mohammed acknowledged the reality of corruption as a national challenge, stressing that the Corps does not shield itself from accountability.
He affirmed that the Corps has been proactive in tackling corruption through a robust anti-corruption framework, strategic operations, and consistent internal monitoring. โAny staff arrested for criminal offences such as extortion will be tried internally, dismissed, and handed over to law enforcement agencies where necessary,โ he stated.
Highlighting previous actions taken, the Corps Marshal recalled the 2021 joint surveillance operation conducted with the Department of State Services (DSS) and ICPC. The initiative, he noted, led to the arrest of over 70 FRSC officials, with prima facie cases established against them.
โThese operations served as a warning and deterrent to others,โ he said.
Mohammed also reaffirmed the current administrationโs resolve to intensify anti-corruption efforts in alignment with President Bola Tinubuโs broader campaign against graft.
As part of its transparency drive, the FRSC has partnered with the Akin Fadeyi Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation to launch the Flag-It App, which enables citizens to report cases of extortion, bribery, and poor service delivery by FRSC personnel.
โMany reports submitted through the app have been thoroughly investigated and addressed. In addition, we recently launched a new mobile application that allows the public to report misconduct and also reward exemplary service by our operatives,โ Mohammed added.
He called on members of the public and the media to continue supporting the Corps by using these tools to report any observed misconduct.
โThis is a call to collective action. The fight against corruption within the system requires collaboration. We encourage the press and the public to continue playing their part,โ he urged.
