Friedrich Merz has failed to secure the absolute majority required to be elected Chancellor of Germany in the first round of parliamentary voting, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner announced on Tuesday.
Speaking via a broadcast on the Bundestag’s official website, Klöckner confirmed that Merz did not reach the necessary 316-vote threshold, meaning he was not elected as Chancellor in the initial round.
Should Merz fail again in a second round, a third vote may be held where a simple “chancellor majority” would suffice for election, in line with constitutional provisions.
