Giorgia Meloni has claimed victory in Italy’s general election and is set to become the country’s first far-right leader since World War Two.
Her party Brothers of Italy is projected to have won 26% of the vote, meaning she is on course to become Italy’s first female leader.
Her right-wing alliance – including Matteo Salvini’s League and former Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia – looks to have control of both houses of parliament
Speaking to reporters after the vote, she promised to govern for all Italians and said she would not betray their trust.
