A global shipping crisis is causing major delays in the delivery of compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks ordered by the Dangote Group, affecting the company’s plans to promote cleaner, more affordable energy across Nigeria. Out of the 3,550 trucks expected, only 450 have arrived in the country so far.
The trucks, part of Dangote’s ambitious clean energy initiative, are meant to transport compressed natural gas across Nigeria. This shift to CNG is seen as a big step toward reducing fuel costs and cutting down harmful emissions in the environment. However, due to ongoing disruptions in global shipping routes, thousands of the trucks are still stuck in transit.
Experts say the delay could slow down Nigeria’s efforts to reduce its dependence on diesel and petrol. The country has been encouraging CNG as a greener and cheaper alternative, especially since the removal of fuel subsidies last year made petrol prices rise sharply.
The Dangote Group says it remains committed to the full rollout. A spokesperson confirmed that the remaining trucks are on the way and will be deployed as soon as they arrive. “We understand how important these trucks are to the country’s energy future and we are working closely with global partners to fast-track their delivery,” the company said.
This development highlights how global issues—like shipping and trade disruptions—can directly affect local efforts to improve lives and build a more sustainable economy. As Nigeria continues its journey towards cleaner energy, the timely arrival of these trucks will play a key role in that transition.
For now, the 450 trucks already delivered are being deployed to strategic parts of the country to begin easing transport costs and supporting industries.
