The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Gombe State has reported that 72 people lost their lives in 171 road crashes recorded between January and June 2025.
Mr. Samson Kaura, the Gombe State Sector Commander of the FRSC, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Gombe.
According to Kaura, a total of 1,156 individuals were involved in the accidents. Of that number, 641 sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 443 escaped unhurt.
He explained that 6.23% of those involved in the crashes died, 55.45% were injured, and 38.32% were uninjured.
A total of 234 vehicles were involved in the crashes, including 105 motorcycles and tricycles, which accounted for 44.87% of the total number.
Providing a month-by-month breakdown, Kaura said 18 deaths were recorded in January, 12 in February, five in March, 16 in April, five in May, and another 16 in June.
He attributed the major causes of the crashes to over-speeding, reckless driving, route violations, and overloading.
The sector commander criticized the nonchalant attitude of some drivers who ignore traffic regulations and fail to observe speed limits. He urged motorists to regularly inspect their vehicles and drive responsibly.
“Now that we are in the rainy season, drivers must exercise extra caution,” he said. “Avoid over-speeding on wet and slippery roads, ensure clear visibility by fixing any obstructions, and if possible, reduce night driving.”
