No fewer than three persons have been confirmed dead, while several others sustained injuries following a violent clash between youths and security operatives in Katsina State.
The incident reportedly occurred during a confrontation that escalated into chaos in one of the affected communities, though details surrounding the immediate cause of the clash remain unclear.
Eyewitnesses said tensions rose after security operatives attempted to disperse a group of youths who were protesting, leading to a violent confrontation. The situation quickly degenerated as stones were thrown and gunshots were allegedly fired, resulting in casualties.
Residents said at least three youths lost their lives in the clash, while several others, including security personnel, were injured. Some victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the clash caused panic in the area, forcing many people to flee their homes for safety.
There was confusion everywhere. People were running, shops were closed, and we heard gunshots. Unfortunately, some lives were lost,” the resident said.
Security sources confirmed the incident, stating that operatives were deployed to restore order after the situation threatened to spiral out of control. According to the sources, the operatives acted to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The Katsina State Police Command said it had commenced an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances that led to the clash and identify those responsible.
In a brief statement, the police urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could escalate tensions, assuring that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice.
The state government also expressed concern over the incident and called for restraint, stressing the need for peaceful engagement and dialogue to resolve grievances.
The clash adds to ongoing concerns over security and youth unrest in parts of the state, as authorities continue efforts to maintain peace and stability.
