Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has appointed Mr. Joachim Achor as the new Accountant General of the state.
The appointment was announced on Thursday in a statement issued in Awka by the governor’s Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime.
According to the statement, Achor was selected through a competitive and merit-based process, which involved computer-based tests, thorough screening, and a final interaction with Governor Soludo himself.
Achor, originally from Abia State, first came to Anambra as a student. He later completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the state, earning the Anambra State Merit Award for being the best corps member of his cohort.
Impressed by his performance, the then military administration offered him an automatic appointment into the state’s civil service. Since then, Achor has steadily risen through the ranks, serving as Director and later as Permanent Secretary, before his latest elevation to Accountant General.
The statement highlighted that Achor’s appointment was based purely on merit, in contrast to past practices where such positions were often influenced by political connections or ethnic affiliations.
“This appointment seeks to institutionalise fairness, professionalism, and national integration within Anambra’s administrative structure,” the statement read.
It further noted that appointing a non-indigene to such a high-ranking position sends a strong message about the state’s commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and competence.
“Anambra belongs to all Nigerians who are willing to serve with excellence. We are building a government anchored on merit, diversity, and service delivery,” the statement added.
Governor Soludo congratulated Achor and encouraged him to serve with integrity, professionalism, and dedication.
