Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for Abia Airport Project in Ubaha Nsulu/Vop

The historic groundbreaking ceremony for the Abia Airport project took place yesterday in Ubaha Nsulu, marking a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructural and economic development. The event was graced by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), who performed the symbolic groundbreaking.

The Governor of Abia State, who presided over the occasion, expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the initial airstrip plan and consenting to its expansion into a full-fledged airport. In his remarks, the Governor commended Mr. Keyamo for his unwavering support and commitment to the realization of the project.

Special recognition was also given to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ben Kalu, and his colleagues for their legislative backing, which ensured the inclusion of the project in the 2024 Appropriation Act.

Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and a proud son of Abia State, was acknowledged for his significant contributions to the project’s conception. His technical expertise, provided voluntarily, played a pivotal role in shaping the airport’s development plan. Additionally, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal H.B. Abubakar, received commendation for his support and for approving the establishment of an Air Force base at the airport.

The Governor addressed public concerns and criticisms regarding the project, emphasizing the government’s openness to constructive dialogue. He described the decision to collaborate with the Federal Government as a strategic move to secure Abia’s long-term prosperity and connect the state to global opportunities.

“This airport project is a strategic investment that will drive urbanization beyond Aba and Umuahia and complement our other major initiatives, such as the Enyimba Hotel upgrade, Nsulu Games Village, and the Medical City project,” the Governor said.

He also lauded the people of Nsulu for donating their land for the transformative project and assured fair compensation for genuine landowners to prevent exploitation.

The event underscores the administration’s vision for infrastructural development and economic growth, with the airport poised to position Abia State as a hub for commerce and tourism.
