A former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has said he has no regrets over his actions while in office, following his release from custody.
Mr Malami spoke on Wednesday, after regaining freedom amid ongoing legal proceedings.
“I have no regrets regarding what I did during my time as a minister,” Mr Malami said in an interview.
“I have spent time in EFCC custody, Kuje Prison, and with the DSS. I believe it is all God’s will, but I will defend myself against the allegations,” he added.
Mr Malami is facing a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering alongside members of his family.
He, his wife, and his son have all pleaded not guilty to charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
He was rearrested on Sunday, 19 January 2026, by operatives of the Department of State Services shortly after his initial release from detention.
Legal Developments
A Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail to Mr Malami and his son on Thursday, 27 February 2026.
The court set bail at ₦200 million each over allegations linked to terrorism-related offences.
Mr Malami has since met the bail conditions and regained his freedom.
Rights Allegations
Mr Malami also accused security agencies of violating his constitutional rights during the investigation.
“They violated my rights by searching my houses and business premises without notifying me,” he said.
He argued that he was entitled to be present during searches to monitor the process.
The case has drawn public attention due to Mr Malami’s previous role as Nigeria’s chief law officer.
Legal analysts say the outcome could have implications for accountability and due process in high-profile corruption cases.
Background
Mr Malami served as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Since leaving office, he has faced multiple investigations and legal challenges, which he has consistently denied, maintaining his innocence and vowing to clear his name in court.
