The Administrator of Rivers State, Joseph Ibas, has officially sworn in the newly elected Local Government (LG) chairmen, marking the start of their three-year tenure in office.
The swearing-in ceremony, which took place in Port Harcourt, drew government officials, traditional rulers, party leaders, and residents who came to witness the transition of leadership at the grassroots level.
Speaking at the event, Administrator Ibas charged the new council bosses to see their positions as a call to serve, urging them to prioritize community development, transparency, and peace in their various local governments. He reminded them that local councils remain the closest arm of government to the people, and therefore must deliver tangible benefits in areas like infrastructure, health care, and education.
Residents welcomed the move, with many expressing hope that the new leaders will bring fresh energy and solutions to the challenges facing their communities. Analysts, however, noted that the effectiveness of the councils will depend largely on adequate funding and accountability.
For citizens across Rivers State, the inauguration signals the beginning of a new chapter in local governance and the possibility of stronger grassroots development.
