The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced plans to arraign former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, today, before a Federal High Court in Kaduna over multiple corruption-related charges.
ICPC spokesperson, Mr John Okor Odey, in a statement issued on Monday, said:
“The suit with number FHC/KD/73/2026 has charges ranging from conversion of and possession of public property to money laundering.
“Similarly, another charge… has also been filed before a Kaduna State High Court… ranging from abuse of office, fraud, and intent to commit fraud, among others.”
He added that the date for arraignment at the state court would be communicated in due course.
The development follows weeks of detention and mounting public pressure on authorities to either charge or release the former governor.
According to the ICPC, the charges filed against Mr El-Rufai include alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.
A separate case has also been instituted at a Kaduna State High Court, where he is charged alongside Mr Amadu Sule over allegations ranging from abuse of office to fraud and conferring undue advantage.
The anti-graft agency confirmed that both cases were filed on Tuesday, 18 March 2026, and that the defendant has been duly served.
Detention
Mr El-Rufai has been in custody since Sunday, 16 February 2026, after honouring an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He was initially interrogated for 48 hours before being transferred to the ICPC.
His continued detention had sparked criticism from civil society groups and political observers, many of whom demanded adherence to due process.
The case marks one of the most high-profile anti-corruption prosecutions involving a former state governor in recent times.
The ICPC’s move to arraign the former governor comes amid growing scrutiny of anti-corruption agencies over prolonged detentions without formal charges.
Background
Mr El-Rufai served as governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023 and has remained active in national politics.
His legal troubles follow a broader pattern of post-office investigations into former public officials accused of financial misconduct.
The arraignment is expected to test the credibility of Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework and judicial independence.
It could also have political implications ahead of future elections, particularly within elite political circles.
Mr El-Rufai is expected to enter a plea when arraigned at the Federal High Court.
Legal proceedings in both courts will determine the trajectory of the case, while observers anticipate possible legal challenges from the defence.
