The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) has reportedly traced several real estate properties in Egypt to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai.

Sources familiar with the probe said the properties, including multiple villas and apartments in Cairo, were uncovered during investigations into alleged financial impropriety linked to Mr el-Rufai’s administration between 2015 and 2023.

The former Governor has reportedly been in ICPC custody since February following earlier questioning by other security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Luxury residential areas

Investigators reportedly identified three villas and six apartments situated in luxury residential areas in New Cairo.

The estates where the properties were found include Arabella Estate, Banafsik Estate, Oriana Estate, and Cairo Festival City.

Checks indicate that villas in some of the estates are valued between $1 million and $1.3 million, while apartments in Cairo Festival City are estimated at $500,000 each.

According to sources involved in the investigation, the properties are believed to have been acquired between 2021 and 2023 while Mr El-Rufai was still serving as governor of Kaduna State.

The ICPC is currently probing the former governor over allegations of financial misconduct during his administration.

However, the former governor has denied any wrongdoing, describing the investigation as politically motivated.

According to him, the probe is linked to his political affiliations rather than evidence of misconduct.

 Legal action against ICPC

Meanwhile, Mr El-Rufai has filed a lawsuit against the anti-corruption agency, challenging the search conducted at his residence in Abuja.

He is seeking N1 billion in damages, alleging unlawful invasion of his home and violation of his fundamental rights.

The investigation into the former governor’s alleged foreign assets could have significant political and legal implications, particularly given Mr El-Rufai’s prominence in national politics.

Observers say the outcome of the probe may influence ongoing anti-corruption efforts and shape public debate about accountability among political office holders in Nigeria.
