If You Want to Protest, Do It Right — Barr. Darlington Advises Nigerians

Abuja, Nigeria — Legal practitioner and public affairs analyst Barrister Darlington has advised Nigerians to conduct their protests in an organized and lawful manner, emphasizing that demonstrations should be peaceful and properly coordinated with security agencies.

Speaking during a live interview on VOP TV, Darlington noted that while protest is a constitutional right, poor organization often leads to clashes with law enforcement and unnecessary tension.[irp]

“If you want to protest, do it right. Organize it in such a way that the police will guide and protect you, not fight you,” Darlington said.

He stressed the importance of engaging the police ahead of demonstrations, ensuring that routes, timing, and safety measures are clearly communicated to prevent misunderstandings.

“The police are not supposed to be your enemies. If you follow the right process, they are duty-bound to protect you and your movement,” he added.

Darlington also urged security operatives to respect citizens’ rights and avoid using excessive force against peaceful [irp]protesters.

“Protest is part of democracy. Once it’s peaceful, there’s no reason for violence or intimidation,” he said.

His comments come amid growing public debate about the right to peaceful assembly and the frequent confrontations between protesters and law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.
