The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, on Wednesday reiterated that the Motor Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Policy of the Nigeria Police Force remains lawful, insisting that the existence of pending litigation does not invalidate the statutory responsibilities of the Police. He stressed that the Force has unwavering respect for the judiciary and will comply fully with all valid orders of courts of competent jurisdiction, while refraining from actions capable of undermining ongoing judicial proceedings.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police clarified that there is, as of today, no final judicial pronouncement declaring the policy unlawful, nor any subsisting order permanently restraining the Force from regulating the use of tinted vehicle glasses. Hundeyin said representations made by Police counsel before the court were done in good faith and accurately reflected the institutional position of the Force, adding that restraint shown so far was in deference to the primacy of the judicial process.
The Police said the clarification became necessary following recent public debates, including a statement credited to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association. While acknowledging the importance of robust civic engagement in a democracy, the Force said it was imperative to provide institutional clarity to reassure the public, affirm respect for the rule of law, and preserve public order. It noted that the Nigeria Police Force operates strictly within the confines of the Constitution and under civil authority in the discharge of its mandate to maintain public safety and internal security.
According to Hundeyin, the administrative communication issued on December 15, 2025, was intended to guide internal planning and enhance public understanding, and did not authorise immediate enforcement actions or conduct inconsistent with any court process. He said operational decisions on enforcement remain within the lawful discretion of the Police, subject to constitutional provisions and judicial oversight, stressing that the regulation of tinted vehicle glasses remains a legitimate security concern linked to the prevention of crimes such as kidnapping and armed robbery.
The Police leadership also reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance against extortion, harassment, or abuse of authority by personnel, warning that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary measures. While recognising the Nigerian Bar Association as a key stakeholder in the justice sector, the Force called for constructive engagement grounded in mutual respect for institutional roles, urging the public to remain calm as it continues to act lawfully and responsibly pending the determination of the court.
