I’ll Name the Perpetrators — Kanu Says Lawyers Too Afraid to Speak

Abuja — Detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has told the court he will personally call out individuals he says are responsible for alleged wrongdoings, accusing his lawyers of being too afraid to name names.

In a statement filed in court as he prepares to represent himself, Kanu said his legal team had hesitated to identify certain persons, prompting him to take over his defence.

“My lawyers are afraid to call names — let me call names, and if anything happens let it be because I stand for the truth,” he said. “You can’t be fighting for justice and still be afraid to call the names of people who committed [the acts]. That’s why I want to defend myself and call any necessary names that are mentionable.”

Kanu made the remarks amid ongoing proceedings in which he has elected to open his own defence after dismissing his previous legal team. He has also sought to subpoena a number of high-profile figures as witnesses in his case.

The court is yet to rule on the scope of evidence Kanu may present while acting as his own counsel. Observers note that the move raises questions about procedure, witness protection and the legal strategy for addressing sensitive allegations in open court.
