Imo Police Ban Use of Mini-Buses, Tricycles for Patrol Operations

Owerri, Imo State – July 16, 2025

The Imo State Police Command has announced a ban on the use of mini-buses and tricycles (popularly known as Keke) for patrol and security operations across the state. The decision, according to the authorities, is aimed at curbing the growing misuse of these vehicles by individuals impersonating security personnel.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Garba, said the measure was necessary to restore public confidence and ensure professionalism in police operations.

“We have observed with concern the increasing use of unbranded mini-buses and tricycles by individuals claiming to be law enforcement agents, often involved in extortion, harassment, and other unlawful activities,” CP Garba stated. “This ban is to standardize our patrol operations and prevent impersonation.”

Effective immediately, all legitimate police patrols must use officially branded and registered vehicles. The public has also been urged to report any unauthorized use of mini-buses or tricycles by individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers.

The directive has drawn mixed reactions from residents. While some support the move as a step toward improving transparency and accountability, others worry it may impact rapid response efforts, especially in areas with poor road access.

Civil rights groups are calling on the police to accompany the ban with public education and to ensure that the rights of citizens are respected during its enforcement.

The Imo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order while safeguarding the rights and security of the public.
