VOP News — Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ini Edo has expressed regret over the title of her new movie, A Very Dirty Christmas, following backlash from Christian groups.
The controversy erupted after the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) criticised the film’s title, describing it as offensive and disrespectful to the Christian faith. In a statement, the association questioned the appropriateness of associating Christmas with the word “dirty” and called on relevant authorities to intervene, including pulling down the movie if the title was not changed.
Reacting to the development, Ini Edo became emotional during a live session on Sunday, December 20, where she appealed to CAN and the Christian community. The actress said she had no intention of dishonouring God or Christianity, noting that significant time, effort, and resources were invested in the project.
She apologised to CAN, stating that she would have changed the movie title if she had known it would provoke controversy. Emphasising that she is a Christian, Ini Edo urged CAN and other concerned Christians to watch the movie before passing judgment.
The actress added that she would willingly pull down the film if it was found to portray God or Christianity negatively. She also appealed for more time to explore ways of modifying the title instead of having the movie taken down.
Meanwhile, following CAN’s complaint, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) responded through its Director-General, Shaibu Husseini, as discussions on the matter continue.
