Iran has carried out a public execution in the southern province of Fars, hanging a man convicted of murdering a woman and her three children, local media reported on Tuesday.
According to the Fars news agency, the man and his wife allegedly killed the victims during a robbery. While the husband was executed near the crime scene, his wifeโwho also received a death sentenceโis expected to be hanged inside a prison.
Authorities described the execution as a response to the brutality of the crime. Reports noted that public executions are rare in Iran, although the country continues to employ capital punishment extensively.
Human rights organisations have repeatedly condemned Iranโs use of executions, saying they are often used to instill fear and suppress dissent.
According to United Nations figures, no fewer than 1,000 people were executed in Iran in 2024, making it one of the countries with the highest execution rates in the world.
